French Brittany Spaniel

If you take a brief look at a French Brittany Spaniel and an American Brittany Spaniel, you may not see any difference. Indeed, they are very similar in physical appearance, but have a number of differences in conformation and performance. It is also noteworthy, that France and the USA have different views on the dog’s coat color: the American Kennel Club does not accept dogs with black spots, which is often viewed in Europe as weird.

French Brittany Spaniels are naturally active. They are innate hunters, and they enjoy any activity related to hunting. They are very appreciative of various outdoor activities and training sessions. These dogs should be trained firmly but positively. Because they love mental stimulation, training should be organized in such a way as to make it a game for them. Brittany Spaniels must not be punished by beating, because this sort of training can make them neurotic, frightful or aggressive.

French Brittany Spaniels are good at hunting feathered game, such as woodcock, partridge, quail, grouse, pheasant and so forth. They are sufficiently enduring and meticulous in doing their job, and they can work successfully in all kinds of terrain. These dogs have short and slightly feathered coat and small hanging ears, so they do not experience difficulties when moving through thickets. Hunting is what the dog is actually intended for, so this is not an apartment dog. If you are considering a possibility of purchasing a French Brittany Spaniel, you must be sure you will be able to spend most of your free time with your Brittany. These dogs are very responsive to positive training and interaction, and they bond easily.

French Brittany Spaniels are very amicable and easy-going, not only with people, but with other animals as well. They love to play with other dogs, especially those of the same or similar breeds. However, puppies must be socialized from early on, because these dogs may run after non-canine pets. Brittanies are great companions for children. These dogs stand 17.5 – 20.5 inches high at the withers. This is one of the smallest breeds of gun dogs. However, they are more active and eager to work than many other hunting dogs.

French Brittany Spaniel breeders have done a tremendous work to improve the breed’s genetic pool. As a result, we can see one of the healthiest dogs in the world. As breeders are particularly concerned about the dog’s genetic potential, they are very scrupulous in selecting breeding stock. However, on rare occasions, some genetic disorders do occur within the breed. Some dogs are likely to go down with skin allergies hip dysplasia, eye problems and epilepsy. Good breeders usually have their own websites with tons of valuable French Brittany Spaniel information concerning the dog’s history, physical appearance, mental qualities and main health issues.
