Brittany Spaniels - Dogs - History

Brittany Spaniels are believed to have originated in the Bretagne region of France. In Europe, these dogs became known as Epagneul Bretons. It may be that breeders crossed spaniels with English Setters in the 19th century. The first written evidence of the breed occurs in an overview of French breeds done in 1910. There, the breed is referred to as the Chien de Bretagne.

Senor Juan Pugibet of Villa Obregon was first to bring the Brittany Spaniel to America. The AKC recognized the breed in 1934 and the first AKC standard was adopted the next year. A few years later, in 1936, the Brittany Spaniel Club of North America was founded.

During World War II, Brittany Spaniel gene pool suffered a lot. European breeders exported their dogs to America and crossed them with the local population. There was also a confusion connected with the Brittany Club of Northern America. Due to the difficulty of keeping in touch with club members, another organization had to be formed. However, after the war everything was settled.

Some breeders claimed that the Brittany Spaniel should not be referred to as a spaniel. In fact, the Brittany is a pointing breed. As the result, the Brittany Spaniel dogs are simply called Brittanys now.
