Brittany Spaniels are popular hunting dogs and family companions. In Europe, they are referred to as Epaneul Bretons. Breeders also distinguish between the original French Brittany Spaniel and American Brittany Spaniel. The latter is now registered by the UKC. It differs significantly in type, personality, and hunting style.
The French Brittany Spaniel has a shorter back and is generally lighter than the American Brittany Spaniel. Also, it has a shorter muzzle and darker eyes. White and black coloration is very common in the Brittany Spaniel. They also come in liver and white, tri-color, and other color patterns. Genes that are responsible for black in the Brittany Spaniel have added much to the attractiveness of the breed.
Brittany Spaniels - Dogs - Training
Brittany Spaniels are sometimes referred to as "le fouguex." This indicates the breed's high activity level. The Brittany Spaniel is a perfect dog for hunting. It is hard working and easy to train. Training should start early, yet harsh methods should be avoided. Obedience training in necessary for the Brittany Spaniel. By the age of 6 months, a puppy should sit and come on command and display other simple obedience skills.
After the puppy has learned the basic obedience commands, it is time to adjust him to a gunshot. Adjustment is achieved by associating the gunshot with the owner and food. Some puppies tend to be shy of gunshots. Ask for advice from a breeder/hunter who has experience in training Brittany Spaniels.
