Brittany Spaniel Dog
The Brittany Spaniel Dog originated in France, and he is believed to have descended from the Setter and some French hunting dog of unknown nature. The Brittany Spaniel is renowned for his exceptional hunting abilities, being particularly adept at pointing. Brittany Spaniels are good at hunting woodcock and partridge, as well as some other birds; they also can hunt hare and rabbit.
Brittany Spaniel Dogs are medium-sized and athletic, with long legs and sturdy yet flexible bodies. They have short hanging ears, and they move in a smooth and free gait. Brittany Spaniels have a very intelligent and vivid facial expression. They are famous for their eagerness to please their loved ones. These dogs are intended for hunting, so they cannot stay without rigorous activity or mental work for a long time. This is not a dog to be locked inside a house for a long time, so the Brittany Spaniel is no good option for people leading sedentary lives.
Brittany Spaniel Dogs come in the following colors: orange and white, liver and white, black and white (not accepted in the USA and Canada, where black is a disqualification) black tricolor and liver tricolor. The coat is not very long and feathered. Tail length can vary. Long-tailed dogs usually have their tails docked in countries, where tail-docking is legal.
American Brittany Spaniels are different from their European counterparts. They are taller, leaner and faster. The Americans have dropped the term “Spaniel” from the name, and the American and Canadian kennel clubs refer to the dog as the Brittany. European, especially French breeders, seem to feel dismayed at the discrepancy and particularly the fact that the black color is considered to be a fault.
Brittany Spaniels are superb home companions. They are very affectionate and playful, and they never display aggression without motivation. More often than not, Brittany Spaniels chase non-canine pets, which is actually a manifestation of their long inherited hunting instinct. Brittany Spaniels require acreage, so they are not recommended for apartment life. These dogs require constant physical and mental stimulation. They are great companions for well behaved children. The Brittany Spaniel Dog is generally a healthy breed, although some species can be prone to hip dysplasia and seizures.
